June: Light on Yoga

The power of awareness!

One of the great trailblazing yoga teachers BKS Iyengar appropriately named his first book Light on Yoga. The book itself does in fact shine a light on the incredible potential inherent within the practice of yoga. As many of us already know, have read, and are continuing to learn yoga has a profound ability to improve everything from physical strength to brain functioning. The question then for many is "How is it possible that a series of poses, breathing techniques, and meditation practices can do that?" My thoughts...empowerment. As my personal practice has developed over the years, I truly believe that the way we approach the mat is in many ways metaphorical for the way in which we approach our life. Some are nervous and in anticipation, others are aggressive and competitive, and still others are easy going. The list can go on and on. However, I've found that the light of yoga shines brightest when we realize that our approach, whether it be conducive to growth or downright maladaptive is ultimately in our control. So this month's sadhana (practice) is about bringing awareness to your approach on and off the mat. Try not to judge what comes to light but instead if need be, improve upon the dialogue associated with your approach. And if you believe like I do that your awareness is powerful, you might find that Iyengar was indeed right when he said, "Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured, and endure what cannot be cured." Namaste, Nisha
